The Key to Staying Motivated for Weight Loss

Most people start their weight loss journey with plenty of willpower and a strong push for motivation. But as the weeks go by, many find that motivation dwindles, and soon they feel defeated and exhausted.

Why does this happen?

The truth is, most people lose motivation not because they lack discipline or willpower, but because they’ve been exhausting themselves both mentally and physically. They’re starving their bodies with restrictive dieting and over-exercising to create a calorie deficit. No wonder they feel drained! A lack of energy is one of the biggest reasons people lose motivation.

Second, they stopped being motivated and feeling defeated because they only focused on the negatives - things they didn't do, things they should have done, and any minute mistakes they made.

Step 1: Restore Energy, Restore Motivation

From my experience working with thousands of weight loss clients, the first thing I focus on is getting their energy back. When you’re tired all the time, it’s nearly impossible to stay motivated. Simple tasks like planning a decent healthy meal seem daunting. I start by helping them eat better with super simple meal ideas that require little preparation, exercise less, rest more, and allow their bodies to recuperate. Once they start feeling more energized, something magical happens their motivation returns along with newfound excitement.

When you have energy, your mood lifts. You become more hopeful, more excited, and more driven. This is the first big win, and it’s worth celebrating!

Funny thing is many of my clients who get their energy back, everyone started going back to the gym.

Step 2: Focus on the Positives, Not the Negatives

Another key to maintaining motivation is focusing on what’s going well. So many people fixate on their mistakes, things they didn’t do, or the areas where they feel they’re falling short. It’s a surefire way to kill motivation. Instead, I help my clients keep their heads above water by shifting their focus to the positives.

I always start the follow-up session with “what went well this past week for celebration?” Every day and every week, we look at the things they’ve done well. We celebrate every non-scale victories like better energy, better mood, eating “bad food” without judging, acne clearing up, and mindset shift. By reflecting on how far they’ve come, they feel empowered and encouraged to keep moving forward.

Step 3: Embrace Trial and Error with Grace

Fourth, I help them to learn to give themselves grace,

There’s no such thing as perfection on a weight loss journey. Too often, people think they’ve "fallen off the wagon" after a small slip-up or “oopsie”, and this leads to feelings of failure.

Part of staying motivated is learning to give yourself grace and allow a lot of room for trial and error so they don't "fall off the wagon or high horse.” Instead, you embark on a luxury tour with us where you can get on and off the tour bus on your own gracefully without tripping and falling.

I teach my clients that their journey isn’t about riding a wagon or a high horse. Instead, they’re on a luxury tour! You can step on and off the bus as needed without guilt or shame.

This mindset shift allows them to keep going without feeling like they have to start over after every mistake or “oopie.” They learn to continue gracefully, taking control of their journey without tripping and falling.

Step 4: Set Easy-to-Achieve Goals

Far too often, people set extreme "all-or-nothing" goals that feel like a sudden death round every day. When you approach your weight loss journey this way, you basically set yourself up for failure every step of the way. There’s no way you can win.

You see why most people get disappointed, discouraged and defeated. Instead, we help you set realistic, easy-to-achieve goals instead of their usual all-or-nothing "sudden death round" goals so they can win easily, feel empowered, and build confidence along the way.

These small victories build empowerment and confidence over time. Winning, even in small ways, fuels the desire to keep going. The funny thing is, when we set these smaller low-ball goals, many of my clients are able to meet and exceed them, and that gives them a powerful confidence boost.
